Everyone is capable of self-expression.
Creativity is essential to learning.
Poetry is self-advocacy.
Hi, I'm Donnie Welch.
I run poetry workshops that support the individual differences of students and young adults with autism and developmental disabilities.
These workshops are based on the idea that movement skills and sensory integration go hand-in-hand with literacy learning; that movement helps us understand rhythm, rhythm helps us understand poetry, and poetry helps us understand each other.
Implementing this curriculum doesn’t require an MFA in Poetry, expensive technology, or a large budget. All it requires is patience, flexibility, and a willingness to play with language. Oh, and some extra Expo markers couldn’t hurt.
